Automobile traffic is an allegory, the imagery intended to conceptually illustrate the overlooked connectedness between strangers. Here strangers are isolated within and insulated by their cars, but share a common road. The drivers represent islands in an archipelago; their isolation from one another being only a shallow illusion. The Archipelago concept is also relevant in a library, where diverse ideas, authors, and subjects are interconnected in multiple ways.
This drawing is a permanent installation in the Holland Library at Washington State University. It is situated in stairwell landing, on a 180 degree curved wall. The imagery responds to the curve, becoming distorted as it nears the left and right edges. The drawing creates a quasi immersive experience to visitors, as they pass through the space enveloped by the drawing.
